LECTURES

This project is a collaborative effort for the Digital Photography & Imaging and Illustration & Visual Narrative courses. Mr Hafiz stressed that our job is to transform the text or add volume to it to make it look more illustrative for this project. All links, sketches and final artwork should be posted on this blog, but grades for illustration (such as distortion, depth and clipping masks) will be given by Mr Hafiz and for photographs by Mr Fauzi.

Mr Hafiz showed how the "object interlacing" tool can be used to easily control the position of elements relative to the text, creating the ability to place them in front of or behind it. He also talked about the ‘object extension’ feature, which allows you to break a single object into multiple parts so that you can edit only a certain part, such as adding a gradient, without affecting the rest of the object. To create depth and draw attention to the text, we should use 3D effects, materials, changes in lighting and distortions, which will make our project more dynamic.

TASK

Poster design

Quotes of the day: "The sunset glow is a fleeting goodbye."

Summary of your design concept:

In the composition, the sunset is the centrepiece, with its bright, warm light that bathes the lake. The words ‘The sunset glow’ are neatly integrated into the sunset itself, as part of its radiance, as if glowing directly into the sky, emphasising the magic of the moment.

The word ‘is a fleeting goodbye’ gradually disappears into the waters of the lake, as if it is leaving and dissolving into the reflection of the sunset. This element visualises the idea of a fleeting goodbye, adding dynamism to the picture.

The poster depicts my girlfriends sitting on the shore of the lake and looking at the sunset. They realise that this moment is not only a farewell to summer, but also to their current stage of life. Autumn is approaching and with it comes the realisation that their friendship will probably undergo a change too. The scene is filled with silence and reflection on the fact that time is inexorably passing.

REFLECTION

During these projects, I learnt how to choose the right fonts to match the overall concept of the poster and enhance the visual perception. I realised that text should not just be readable, but should also reflect the mood and ideas behind the image. For example, for my sunset and farewell poster, I chose fonts that integrate softly into the atmosphere, conveying a sense of time slipping away.

I also learnt how important typography is in creating harmony in a composition. By using the right font sizes, spacing and weights, I was able to ensure that the text was not only part of the visual story, but additionally conveyed the concept of the poster. In this way, I realised that typography, like imagery, is an important element for conveying emotions and ideas, and should work in harmony with the rest of the design.
