TASK 3: DEVELOPMENT & DESIGN
Information about the task
In task 3, we had to choose one of the 3 ideas proposed in task 2 and create a design piece. Develop an idea using colors, composition, font, layout, etc., applying design principles.
On Task 2, we completed three sketches and had to choose the one that best reflected the design principles.
A4, JPEG format, 300 dpi resolution
<Your name, project name, task 3>
Write a 200-word rationale.:
- the decisions made in your design
- the meaning/purpose of the design
- design principles that are used in creating the design
I decided to choose sketch #3, as it seemed to me the most suitable for demonstrating the principles of design: composition, depth and balance are best expressed in it.
Sketch #3
This drawing conveys the atmosphere of morning Paris captured through the open window frame. The Eiffel Tower rises in the center of the composition, creating a sense of romance and charm of the French capital.
A cup of hot coffee and an appetizing cake are depicted in the foreground, the steam from which rises upwards, enhancing the cozy and warm atmosphere. Next to them lies a vintage camera, hinting at traveling, photography and the desire to capture beautiful moments.
Design Principles
- Focus and perspective: The open window creates a natural frame for the scene, directing the viewer's gaze from the cozy breakfast to the majestic tower.
- Harmony of Details: The camera, coffee, cake and roses are combined in one composition, creating a balance between cozy and adventurous spirit.
- Lines and Style: Light, sketchy strokes give the drawing an air of spontaneity, as if it were a sketch from a traveler's personal journal.
2. Research and References
The purpose of the design is to inspire and curiosity, inviting viewers to imagine themselves in this moment of relaxation and exploration. By combining principles such as contrast, alignment, proximity, and hierarchy, I have created a holistic and visually appealing composition that conveys both aesthetic appeal and a clear narrative.
At first, I decided to illustrate the Eiffel Tower, but before that I needed to collect references. I looked at various images and camera angles to understand the proportions and details that would be appropriate in my composition.

3. Process Work
In this project, I created a painting based on design principles. My goal was to convey an atmosphere of comfort, travel and dreaminess using warm colors and a detailed composition.
1. Idea and concept
I chose the view of the Eiffel Tower because Paris is often associated with romance and inspiration. In the foreground, I depicted a vintage camera, a cup of coffee, and a postcard— elements that enhance the feeling of nostalgia and creativity. The flowers in the vase add vivacity and balance to the composition.
2. Design principles used
- Balance – I have placed key objects on both sides of the window, creating balance.
- Contrast – a combination of warm and cold shades (sunset sky and bluish shadows) enhances the depth.
- The focus is on the Eiffel Tower, but the details in the foreground make the scene more interesting.
- Harmony – colors and elements are connected by a common soft aesthetic, which creates a holistic and balanced perception of the image.
- Unity and integrity – all the elements are interconnected through the color palette, style and theme, creating a harmonious perception.
- Rhythm and repetition – repeating shapes (windows, flowers, clouds) help direct the viewer's gaze through the composition.
- Depth and perspective – Using foreground, middle and background creates a sense of space and makes the image more realistic.
- Details and textures – small elements such as postcard patterns or flower petals add liveliness and realism to the image.
The first step in creating the poster was to draw the sky with sunset. I started with soft gradients that smoothly transition from warm shades of pink and orange to cool blue tones. This helped create an atmosphere of comfort and romance, as well as set the overall color scheme for the entire composition.
I decided to work in Procreate on a tablet, as this program provides convenient tools for creating soft gradients and picturesque textures. Thanks to her, I was able to achieve the effect of paint strokes, which made my work more atmospheric and artistic.

I decided to choose romantic colors, as Miss suggested to me, to convey an atmosphere of comfort and dreaminess. However, she also reminded me of the importance of contrast so that the image doesn't look too soft and blurry.

Next, I started creating the Eiffel Tower. After studying the references, I began to draw its basic shapes and details, trying to preserve recognizable proportions and architectural elements. I added fine lines and shadows to convey volume and make the tower more realistic, harmoniously fitting it into the atmosphere of the sunset sky.

After finishing the Eiffel Tower and the background, I started creating the window. It plays an important role in the composition, creating a sense of perspective and depth, as well as adding a cozy atmosphere, as if the viewer is watching the Paris sunset from his room.
At this stage, I added details of the urban landscape, including buildings and trees. This helped to create a more lively and realistic atmosphere, conveying a sense of depth and perspective.

I thought that I could add something bright to the trees to enliven the composition, so I decided to paint flowers. In search of inspiration, I found references on Pinterest, looked at what it might look like, and tried to repeat them in my work.

It remains to complete the details on the table, and the first item I took up was the camera. To begin with, I drew a sketch to make it easier to draw it.

The next step was to pick up a vase of flowers. As Miss advised, I moved it closer to the middle to make the composition look more balanced.

I added shadows from objects below to create a sense of depth and make the scene more realistic. This helped enhance the lighting effect of the setting sun, and now all I have to do is draw a coffee.
It seemed to me that there was nothing next to the coffee. Also, as Miss said, it was necessary to add elements to the composition so that there would be no voids. I decided to add a postcard that will add even more romance to the whole picture.
Miss liked my work and said that I am doing very well. She has already given me feedback on what needs to be added. She suggested adding a single rose next to the coffee to create an even more romantic composition. She also recommended adding a camera strap to make the scene more complete and natural.

I started drawing the little rose to enhance the romantic atmosphere of the composition. I wanted it to feel delicate and natural, so I carefully chose soft colors and gentle shading.

After I finished with the rose, I started painting the camera strap, trying to make it natural and harmonize with the composition.
4. Final Outcome
Design Principles :
- Balance: I have placed key objects on both sides of the window, ensuring a visually balanced composition.
- Contrast: The combination of warm and cool tones—such as the golden hues of the sunset and the bluish shadows—enhances depth and creates a dynamic interplay of light.
- Focus: The Eiffel Tower serves as the central focal point, but the detailed foreground elements, such as the camera, coffee, and flowers, add depth and interest to the scene.
- Harmony: The colors and elements are unified by a soft, romantic aesthetic, creating a cohesive and visually pleasing composition.
- Unity and Integrity: All the elements are interconnected through the color palette, style, and theme, ensuring a harmonious perception of the artwork.
- Rhythm and Repetition: The repeated shapes—windows, flowers, and clouds—help guide the viewer’s eye through the composition naturally.
- Depth and Perspective: The use of foreground, middle ground, and background establishes a sense of space, making the scene more immersive and realistic.
- Details and Textures: Small intricate details, such as the patterns on the postcard and the delicate petals of the flowers, add liveliness and realism to the illustration.
FEEDBACK
Week 6:
Miss noted that the third sketch looks more interesting and supported his choice. She also suggested adding a description of the third sketch from Task 2 to Task 3 to make the explanation clearer.
In addition, Miss recommended using romantic colors, but not forgetting the contrast to make the poster look gentle and atmospheric. She also advised moving objects closer to the center for a better composition.
Additionally, she noted that the coffee seemed empty next to it, and suggested adding something to make the composition look more complete and balanced.Week 7:
Miss said she liked the work and that I was doing very well. She already gave feedback on improvements: she suggested adding one rose next to the coffee to further enhance the romantic composition. She also recommended adding a camera strap to make the composition more complete.Miss also said to look at the Module Information Booklet to see what else needs to be added or refined in the work.
REFLECTIONS
Experience:
Working on this illustration was both challenging and rewarding. I enjoyed experimenting with colors, lighting, and composition to create a romantic and atmospheric scene. Adjusting elements like the placement of objects and the balance of warm and cool tones helped me refine my skills in visual storytelling.
Observations:
I noticed that small details, such as textures and shadows, play a crucial role in making the scene feel more realistic and immersive. The feedback from my instructor helped me see areas for improvement, such as adjusting the composition to avoid empty spaces and ensuring contrast while maintaining a soft aesthetic.
Findings:
Through this process, I learned the importance of balance and unity in composition. The interaction between light and shadow significantly affects the overall mood, and adding small elements, like a single rose and a camera strap, enhanced the storytelling. Checking the Module Information Booklet also helped ensure that all required principles and elements were incorporated effectively.
