Experience

The Design Research Methodology course has been an insightful and transformative journey in understanding the foundational principles and practical applications of design research. Throughout the lessons, I gained hands-on experience in developing research proposals, conducting critical literature reviews, and designing primary research strategies such as surveys and focus groups. The course challenged me to think critically about how to structure research questions, select appropriate methods, and ethically collect and analyze data to inform design decisions. Group discussions and tutorials led by Miss Jinchi were especially helpful in clarifying complex concepts and providing personalized guidance on my research projects.

Observation

One of the key observations I made during the course was the importance of clearly defining research objectives and aligning them with the chosen methodology. For example, the process of selecting between qualitative and quantitative methods required careful consideration of the research questions’ nature and the type of insights needed. I also noticed how crucial it is to integrate theoretical frameworks to support the analysis and interpretation of data, which adds academic rigor and credibility to the research. Furthermore, the iterative feedback process highlighted common challenges in research design, such as avoiding vague questions, ensuring data validity, and maintaining participant engagement.

Findings

From this course, I found that successful design research depends not only on the selection of appropriate methods but also on meticulous planning and reflection at each stage. The experience taught me that combining multiple data sources (e.g., surveys, focus groups, visual analysis) provides a richer, more comprehensive understanding of user behavior and design impact. I also realized the value of maintaining transparency through proper citation and documentation, which strengthens the trustworthiness of the findings. Lastly, the course reinforced the importance of adapting research approaches based on ongoing feedback and reflection to enhance the overall quality and relevance of design outcomes.
