DESIGN RESEARCH DISSERTATION
DESIGN RESEARCH DISSERTATION
INSTRUCTION
Experience
This module marked my first experience of working on a full design research dissertation and an academic journal article. At the beginning, the process felt challenging, as academic research and long-form critical writing were new to me. I had to learn how to structure a dissertation, develop a clear research focus, engage with academic literature, and present findings in a formal and scholarly manner. In addition, I needed to understand academic conventions such as referencing, citation styles, and maintaining a consistent academic tone throughout the work. Writing a journal article alongside the dissertation further deepened my understanding of academic standards, conciseness, and clarity. This dual task required careful time management and the ability to adapt the same research content for different academic formats. Despite the initial difficulties, this experience allowed me to grow both academically and professionally as a design student and develop greater discipline in research-based work.
Observations
Throughout the module, I observed significant improvement in my research and writing skills. Continuous guidance and constructive feedback played an important role in this development. In particular, Dr. Yip Jinchi provided consistent support from the beginning until the end of the module. Her detailed feedback helped me identify weaknesses in my argument, improve the clarity of my writing, and strengthen the academic quality of my work. I also noticed that regular consultations and written feedback encouraged me to approach my research more critically and thoughtfully. I observed how feedback is an essential part of the research process, as it encouraged critical reflection and refinement rather than simple correction. This process helped me become more independent and confident in evaluating and improving my own work.
Findings
By the end of this module, I gained a deeper understanding of the research process in design, including critical analysis, academic writing, and reflective thinking. I learned how to respond effectively to feedback and use it as a tool to improve my work. This allowed me to revise my research with greater awareness of academic expectations and research quality. With the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Yip Jinchi, I was able to significantly enhance my dissertation and journal article. Her support helped me strengthen my arguments, improve coherence, and present my research in a more professional academic manner. This experience has increased my confidence in conducting academic research and has prepared me for future research-based projects. I am sincerely grateful to Dr. Yip Jinchi for her dedication, support, and valuable guidance throughout this module.
