RATIONALE
i) The decisions made in my design
In my design, I carefully selected elements that contribute to a soft, romantic, and atmospheric composition. The open window serves as a framing device, drawing attention to the Eiffel Tower while also giving depth to the scene. The placement of objects, such as the vase, camera, coffee cup, and postcard, was adjusted to ensure a well-balanced and visually engaging composition. The addition of a rose near the coffee cup enhances the romantic theme and helps to create a harmonious arrangement. I also used warm and cool tones to establish contrast and depth, making the sunset glow feel immersive and dreamy.
ii) The meaning/purpose of the design
This illustration captures a romanticized moment of Paris, evoking a sense of nostalgia, travel, and peaceful contemplation. The open window represents freedom and exploration, while the carefully arranged objects tell a story of someone pausing to admire the beauty of the moment. The warm hues of the sunset contrast with the cooler tones of the shadows, enhancing the dreamy and serene atmosphere. The postcard adds a personal touch, reinforcing the idea of memories and the beauty of capturing fleeting moments.
iii) The design principles that are employed to create the design
- Balance – The elements on both sides of the window create a visually balanced composition.
- Contrast – The combination of warm and cool colors enhances depth and atmosphere.
- Emphasis – The Eiffel Tower serves as the focal point, framed by the window, while the foreground details add richness to the scene.
- Harmony – A soft, cohesive color palette ties all elements together, ensuring visual unity.
- Rhythm and repetition – The repetition of organic shapes, such as flowers, clouds, and architectural elements, guides the viewer's eye through the composition.
- Depth and perspective – The foreground, middle ground, and background establish spatial depth, making the scene feel more immersive.
- Details and textures – Small elements, such as the flower petals, reflections, and patterns on the postcard, add realism and visual interest.
REFLECTION
What have I learnt in this Module?
In this module, I have deepened my understanding of design principles, composition, and color harmony. I have also improved my ability to balance elements within an illustration and create a more cohesive visual story. Additionally, I learned how to refine my work based on feedback and apply new techniques to enhance my design.
What did I enjoy the most?
I really enjoyed the creative process of bringing my illustration to life, especially experimenting with colors and lighting to achieve a warm and romantic atmosphere. I also found it exciting to add small details that enhanced the storytelling aspect of the piece.
What did I not enjoy the most?
One of the more challenging aspects was making adjustments based on feedback and ensuring that all elements worked harmoniously together. Some revisions required more time than expected, but in the end, they helped improve the final outcome.
What have I learnt about myself through this module?
I have learned that I am capable of pushing my creative limits and refining my work through multiple iterations. I also realized that I enjoy paying attention to details and creating a sense of depth in my compositions.
What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
My approach to design has evolved as I have become more mindful of composition, balance, and contrast. I now think more critically about how elements interact within a space. However, my passion for storytelling through visuals has remained constant, and I continue to seek ways to express emotions and atmosphere in my artwork.
What are my aspirations?
I aspire to continue growing as a designer and illustrator, developing a strong personal style while mastering different techniques. I also want to explore more ways to communicate narratives through my work and create visually compelling pieces that evoke emotions and engagement.
